Playoff preview: On any given Sunday...

Playoff baseball returns to Belfast this Sunday as the Cavan Comets make the trip north to match up against the Belfast Buccaneers in a one game sudden death playoff semi final.

With the Belfast Hornets waiting in the wings, Jose Santos’ team will have to shake off any rustiness from not playing for a month to take on a determined Comets side that booked their trip to the postseason thanks to final day loss incurred by the Belfast Northstars in Ashbourne.

The Bucs should take heart in the fact that this is a series that they have dominated through the 2015 season, winning four and only losing one.

The wins came comfortably too, with scores of 14-2, 12-2, 8-2 and 15-6 showcasing a potent Belfast offence and the only loss coming in Cavan, 9-5.

Belfast will have plenty of weapons against a streaky Comets side with veteran pitchers Jon Carter (4-1, 1.80 ERA, 0.750 WHIP) and Sean Shackley (4-2, 5.97 ERA, 1.805 WHIP) available for selection and a batting order that contains batting champion Terry Rosbotham (0.580 BA, 0.644 OBP, 0.940 SLG, 2 HR, 31 RBI) and talented rookie Christopher Barr (0.525 BA, 0.642 OBP, 0.550 SLG, 14 RBI, 23 SB).

The Buccaneers can take nothing for granted against a Cavan team that can score runs in bunches and in the arena of a one game playoff, any errors will be capitalised on. Total focus will be needed to ensure an all Belfast divisional final.

The game will start approximately 3:30 on Sunday at Hydebank.
