Hornets swatted at final hurdle
After an early start for the Hornets, a surprisingly warm October morning welcomed the Belfast side to Corkagh Park for a one game, winner-take-all for the Baseball Ireland B league title.
The team standing in their way, the Dublin Spartans, had already caused an upset themselves, knocking off the undefeated Dublin City Hurricanes and were looking to add yet another title to their already swollen trophy cabinet.
With Kevin O'Hare and Mark Smith unavailable, the Hornets would send Colin Woods to the hill to take on a young and talented Spartans roster.
The Hornets would jump out to an early 2-run lead but unfortunately, that was as good as the day got for the B League North champs.
Errors and failure to bring in runners led to the Spartans to go on a 14-2 run as the day went on; Woods giving way to Gord Cuthbert in the fourth, velocity giving way to guile.
Unfortunately, by that stage the Spartans tails were up and as their fourteenth run plated, the Hornets doffed their caps to the better team.
